Article 141 of the Constitution of India lays down the doctrine of binding precedent according to which the law declared by the Supreme Court is binding on all courts. In a 1989 judgment passed by a five judge Bench, the Supreme Court held that the doctrine of binding precedent has the merit of promoting a certainty and consistency.
